San Francisco, Calif. - 10 November, 2011 - City Lights Books and Vince Emery announce a free event: "A Wake for 1978: Goodbye to Jonestown, Harvey Milk, George Moscone, and more."

Commemorating the 33rd anniversary of the Jonestown Massacre and the release of Double Play: The Hidden Passions Behind the Double Assassination of George Moscone and Harvey Milk by Mike Weiss, the event will remember a watershed year in San Francisco history.

When: Friday, November 18, 2011 beginning at 7:00 p.m.

  • Mike Weiss will read from Double Play about Harvey Milk and George Moscone.
  • Rare 1978 videos of Harvey Milk, George Moscone, and Dan White will be shown.
  • Joel Selvin will speak about and play 1978 music.
  • Hors d'oeuvres will be served. Open pay bar.

About the participants:

Mike Weiss is the author of Double Play: The Hidden Passions Behind the Double Assassination of George Moscone and Harvey Milk, which won the Edgar Award as Best True Crime Book of the Year and was called "masterful" by Publisher's Weekly and "true, stunning, powerful, compelling history brought to life" by John Rothman on KGO radio.

Jack Hirschman is a world-renowned poet and social activist who has written more than 50 volumes of poetry and essays. Hirschman was the 2006 Poet Laureate of San Francisco and is one of the founders of the San Francisco International Poetry Festival.

Leah Garchik has been writing her award-winning daily column in the San Francisco Chronicle since 1984. She also wrote San Francisco: The City's Sights and Secrets, is a panelist on the KALW radio's audience-participation quiz show Minds Over Matter, and was the bell ringer in a German polka band.

Joel Selvin is the former music critic for the San Francisco Chronicle and currently serves as the paper's senior pop music correspondent. Selvin has written or co-authored ten books; his latest is Smartass: The Music Journalism of Joel Selvin.
